Dragon's Ring Demo
After pencilling it in, I block in the colors in oils. I tend to like to use the base colors of what I will be using for the detail work. This painting came together pretty fast here. I like to leave pencil lines showing.
Now, I start the detailing in of things. All this goes fairly easy and I always start with the head and eyes, as that defines the rest of the beast... the finish will follow...

You should have saved yourself a ton of work, Bob, and painted the scene in foggy silhouette, in homage to "Beast From 20,000 Fathoms." At least, that's the first thing that popped into my head when I saw the image.
I love these types of posts - it's great to get a look behind the curtain to see how the composition develops.
